Why Northern CNC Chose the Kimla CNC Router
Established around five years ago, Northern CNC is a specialist CNC product development business based in the North East of England. The company works across a wide range of materials including plastics, composites, alloys and timber, supporting bespoke manufacturers and heavy industry customers with flexible, high-quality CNC machining services.
Known for its versatility and problem-solving approach, Northern CNC has continued to evolve in line with customer demand. From one-off bespoke components to more complex production requirements, the company is equipped to respond quickly to a wide variety of projects.
As Jack, CNC operator at Northern CNC, explains, “If a customer comes in one morning, asks for something a bit funky, a bit different, we’ll make it happen.”
To support the continued growth of the business, Pat Carr, Managing Director at Northern CNC, looked to Daltons for expert advice on a CNC router that could provide high accuracy, large capacity and reliable performance across multiple materials. Having previously worked with a Kimla machine at another company, Pat already had first-hand experience of the brand’s capabilities and knew the level of performance he wanted to achieve.
Daltons supplied a Kimla BPF1731 3-axis CNC router with a 400mm Z axis. The machine was selected to meet Northern CNC’s requirement for accurate, large-capacity 3D machining, with the high gantry and extended Z axis providing the flexibility needed for profiling and more demanding applications.
Andy Walsh, Sales Director at Daltons, comments: “Pat already knew what he wanted in terms of machine capability and performance and with the bespoke nature of the Kimla CNC manufacturing we were delighted to deliver a solution that exceeded his expectations.”
Since installation, the Kimla has become an integral part of Northern CNC’s workshop. The machine is used for a variety of day-to-day applications including cutting, drilling, polishing Perspex edges, machining timber and advanced materials, producing detailed components such as J handles, and carrying out brass and metal engraving.
The Kimla’s speed, accuracy and repeatability have proved particularly valuable for a business handling such a broad mix of work. Jack describes the machine as fast and reliable, delivering consistent results every day. The unlimited tool library and 10-position tool changer also allow the team to move efficiently between different operations, helping to streamline production and reduce downtime.
Ease of use has been another important benefit. Although the machine can appear complex at first, Jack explains that it quickly becomes straightforward to operate, giving users confidence and helping the team get the best from the technology.
The relationship between Northern CNC and Daltons has also been key to the success of the project. From initial discussions through to installation, aftercare and ongoing maintenance support, Daltons worked closely with the customer to ensure the machine delivered on both current requirements and future ambitions.
Jack summarises the experience of working with Daltons as “above and beyond”, adding that the level of service and aftercare makes the customer feel “part of a family”.
For Northern CNC, the Kimla BPF1731 has provided the accuracy, flexibility and reliability required to support continued growth. For Daltons, the project demonstrates how the right CNC solution, backed by expert advice and ongoing support, can help ambitious manufacturers expand their production capability with confidence.
