PIABC Quality Assured
Independently assessed training quality for confidence and compliance
Certificated Training
Comprehensive, PUWER-compliant training designed to support safe operation, legal compliance and confident use of woodworking machinery.
Daltons delivers operator training tailored to your team’s experience level, machinery and working environment.
Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), employers are legally required to ensure that operators of woodworking machinery are adequately trained.
Daltons’ Woodworking Machinery Operator Training is designed to help employers meet these obligations while improving safety, consistency and operator confidence.
The course is suitable for:
Novice operators, including new starters and apprentices
Experienced operators requiring refresher training or compliance updates
Anyone who maintains, cleans or sets up the machines
People who assist in the machining process such as loading, feeding, taking off etc.
All types, makes and models of woodworking machinery
On successful completion, delegates receive certification aligned with PIABC Quality Assured and IOSH Approved Training Provider standards where applicable, suitable for PUWER records and audits.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that trained and experienced wood machine operators receive refresher training at least every three to five years, but this can vary depending on circumstance. Woodworking machine refresher training is required for the following;
For machinists and operators who occasionally stand in
For an operator returning to a particular machine having not used it for some time
Following an accident or near miss to demonstrate the incident can be avoided
Following a change in legislation or when new guidance is brought in
If the machining process or system of work changes
If new machine control systems have been fitted
If new equipment has been introduced
Each machine type is covered by an individual training unit. The aim of each course unit is to inform, access and certify the learner in Safe Setting and Operator Training on each woodworking machine in accordance with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, the Workplace Health Safety and Welfare Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Each course will cover the following areas;
Identification and function of key machine controls/features
Correct selection, setting and use of safety devices/guards/jigs
Correct selection, setting and use of machine
Correct selection, setting and use of tooling (as required)
Safe use of machines
Safe working practices, risk reduction and identifying/preventing hazards
Planned preventative maintenance
Full practical assessment of above
Regulations that apply to the machines and general/legal requirements
Each learner receives an assessment at the end of each unit. Successful candidates are issued with a certificate detailing the machine units they have completed.
The majority of our training course units include the provision of a training book with detailed information, illustrations and important safety information specific to that machine type. These books are left with each operator for future reference.

Training covers a wide range of woodworking machinery typically found in industrial and educational workshops. This includes panel saws, sliding table saws, crosscut saws, band saws, planers, thicknessers, spindle moulders and sanding machines. Content is tailored to the machines in use on your site.
Yes. Many incidents involve experienced operators. Refresher training focuses on safe systems of work, current legislation, changes in best practice and reinforcing correct operating habits, rather than basic machine use alone.
Yes. Training is delivered using your own machinery wherever possible and adapted to your workshop layout, guarding arrangements and operating procedures. This ensures training reflects real working conditions rather than generic examples.
Yes. Training content and certification are designed to support PUWER requirements. Documentation provided can be used as part of your training records during inspections, audits or compliance reviews.
Group sizes depend on the number of machines, experience levels and site conditions. Daltons will advise on suitable group sizes to ensure training remains effective, safe and practical.
